What is a Communication Disorder?

Communication disorders may manifest via speaking, listening, reading, and/or writing.


Some symptoms include:

  • difficulty finding the words you want to say

  • difficulty pronouncing words due to muscle weakness/incoordination

  • difficulty comprehending spoken/written language

  • difficulty writing and spelling the appropriate letters for meaningful words

1. APHASIA - loss of ability to understand or express speech, caused by brain damage.

2. ACQUIRED APRAXIA OF SPEECH (AOS) - a “neurologic speech disorder that reflects an impaired capacity to plan or program sensorimotor commands necessary for directing movements that result in phonetically and prosodically normal speech” (Duffy, 2013, p. 4)

3. DYSARTHRIA - a motor speech disorder in which the muscles that are used to produce speech are damaged, paralyzed, or weakened.

A speech-language pathologist evaluates and provides individualized treatment to meet the specific needs of the individual via compensatory techniques and rehabilitative treatment.
